The Danse bacchanale from Camille Saint-Saëns' opera Samson et Dalila (op. 47) ranks among the most colourful orchestral pieces of the French late Romantic era. The opera was composed between 1875 and 1877 and combines Saint-Saëns' mastery of orchestration with a pronounced taste for exotic timbres – a characteristic that left a lasting mark on French music of that period.

The Bacchanale, conceived in the third act as an orgiastic festive dance of the Philistines, unfolds a sensuously charged musical language full of rhythmic energy and Oriental colouring. Saint-Saëns deploys the harp, percussion, and the entire woodwind section to striking effect, conjuring an atmosphere of ecstatic abandon. The work stands as a prime example of the French Orientalism of the second half of the nineteenth century – a movement that captivated composers such as Bizet and, later, Debussy.

As a concert piece, the Danse bacchanale continues to be performed frequently around the world and is considered one of Saint-Saëns' most popular orchestral works. The combination of memorable melody, brilliant instrumentation, and dramatic cumulative power makes it a highly effective programme item that explores the full potential of a large orchestra.

The opera "Samson et Dalila," of which the "Danse bacchanale" forms a part, went largely unperformed in France for many years despite its fame today. Franz Liszt, who was a close friend of Saint-Saëns and a champion of his music, made the world premiere possible at the Weimar Court Theatre under his successor Eduard Lassen. In France, the opera was kept off the stage for decades due to its biblical subject matter, and the Paris Opéra did not add it to its repertoire until 1892. The "Danse bacchanale" from the third act later gained tremendous popularity as a standalone concert piece as well.
