Albert Roussel's “Le festin de l'araignée” (The Spider's Banquet) was composed in 1912–13 as a ballet score and is presented here in its version as symphonic fragments. The work belongs to the context of French Impressionism, yet with its rhythmic incisiveness and harmonic astringency it perceptibly moves beyond the sound world of Debussy. Roussel, who had been a naval officer before embarking on a musical career and who throughout his life maintained a fondness for subjects drawn from nature and the exotic, finds here a wholly distinctive musical voice.
The score conjures the life of a garden in fascinating miniature detail — insects, dance, and quiet passing away. The orchestral sound is at once delicate and precise: harp, celesta, and finely differentiated strings create atmospheric transparency, while woodwinds and percussion provide pointed accents. The music breathes impressionistic colour, yet already displays those neoclassical contours that would come to define Roussel's later output.
“Le festin de l'araignée” is considered one of Roussel's most accessible and at the same time most characteristic works — a masterpiece of French orchestral writing from the early modern period that unites elegance and nature poetry with an unobtrusive compositional rigour.
