Albert Roussel's Suite in F, Op. 33 was composed in 1926, at a time when the French composer had already broken free from his early impressionist influences and found his own distinctive, powerfully expressive style. The suite shows Roussel at the height of his compositional powers, characterized by rhythmic vitality and a harmonic language that mediates between tonal structures and modern chromaticism.
The work embodies that characteristic French modernism of the 1920s, which distinguished itself both from German late Romanticism and from radical avant-gardism. Roussel's music here combines neoclassical formal clarity with a lively, often dance-like rhythmic character and colorful orchestration that exploits the full sonic possibilities of the large orchestra.
The suite is considered representative of Roussel's mature style, which unites French elegance with a certain austere, Nordic severity – a characteristic that may perhaps be traced back to his Breton origins and his years as a naval officer. The music displays that synthesis of structural logic and sensuous sonority that made Roussel one of the most significant French symphonists of his generation.
