Rachmaninov's symphonic fantasy "The Rock" was composed in 1893 as a work by the 20-year-old composer and already displays the characteristic features of his later mastery. The large-scale orchestral piece reveals that melancholic fundamental mood and lyrical intensity that would make Rachmaninov one of the most significant representatives of Russian late Romanticism. The musical language combines Western European symphonic tradition with the specifically Russian coloring of his generation.
The score unfolds a darkly romantic atmosphere, characterized by expansive melodic arches and an orchestral palette that already heralds Rachmaninov's later masterworks. Harp and expanded wind section lend the work that sonic opulence which would become characteristic of the composer.
As an early orchestral piece, "The Rock" stands at the beginning of Rachmaninov's symphonic output and is considered an important testament to his development into the great symphonist of Russian modernism. The work is said to have been inspired by Lermontov's poem of the same name and documents the young composer's deep roots in the Russian literature and culture of his time.
