Rachmaninoff's fourth and final piano concerto was composed in 1926 during his American years and reflects the composer's artistic uncertainty in exile. The work displays a markedly different musical language from his popular earlier concertos – more austere, concentrated, and less effusively melodious. The characteristic Rachmaninoff elements such as expansive melodic arcs and virtuosic piano passages are still present, but notably compressed and interspersed with more modern harmonic turns.
The concerto is considered the most problematic of the four piano concertos and is said to have preoccupied the composer throughout his life. Rachmaninoff subjected it to several fundamental revisions – first in 1928, then again in 1940/41 in what is now the most frequently performed third version. This final version is significantly streamlined and abandons expansive romantic gestures in favor of a more austere yet more concisely structured musical language.
Despite its more restrained texture, the work preserves Rachmaninoff's unmistakable Russian voice. The underlying melancholic mood and elegiac lyricism connect it to the late Romantic tradition, while the harmonic concentration reveals the influence of American modernism.
