Rachmaninoff's Third Symphony was composed in 1936 during the composer's American exile and represents the crowning achievement of his symphonic output. The work combines Rachmaninoff's characteristic Russian melancholy and expressiveness with a more condensed, concentrated musical language compared to his two earlier symphonies. The typical expansive melodic arcs and lush late-Romantic orchestration remain intact, yet the work displays greater structural tightening.

The symphony reflects both Rachmaninoff's roots in Russian musical tradition and his experiences as an exile in the New World. Despite modern influences, the composer remains faithful to his unmistakable personal style, characterized by lyrical intensity, virtuosic instrumental writing, and deeply felt nostalgia.

The work is considered one of the last significant manifestations of late-Romantic symphonic writing and reportedly met with a restrained response at its premiere. Today the Third Symphony is valued as a mature masterwork that impressively documents Rachmaninoff's compositional development and demonstrates his capacity for emotional directness even in its most concentrated form.

The symphony was well received by audiences but remained overshadowed by his more popular Second Symphony.
