Rachmaninoff's Second Piano Concerto is considered the epitome of late Romantic virtuoso art and ranks among the most popular works in the concert repertoire. Completed in 1901, the work shows the composer at the height of his melodic inventiveness: sweeping, lyrical-melancholic themes combine with brilliant pianistic virtuosity to create a soundscape of overwhelming emotional intensity.
The music breathes the spirit of Russian late Romanticism with its characteristic elegiac qualities and tendency toward orchestral opulence. Here Rachmaninoff develops his unmistakable musical language, which combines Russian folklore with Western European formal tradition. The orchestra functions not merely as accompanist, but as an equal partner to the soloist.
The concerto is said to have held personal significance for Rachmaninoff as well, having been created after a period of self-doubt. Therapeutic sessions with Nikolai Dahl had helped restore the composer's confidence. Thus the work unites technical mastery with an emotionality ranging from profound melancholy to triumphant ecstasy – qualities that made it the prototype of the Romantic piano concerto.
