Edward Elgar composed his five marches from the “Pomp and Circumstance” series between 1901 and 1930. The third, written in C minor, dates from 1904 and thus belongs to the most productive period of his career. While the first march in the series achieved worldwide fame through its central trio melody, the third captivates with a darker, more stately tone that combines the heroic pathos of the era with characteristic British nobility.
In its musical language, the work reflects a distinctly English strain of late Romanticism: powerful brass fanfares, velvety string passages, and a commanding orchestration for large orchestra that impressively attests to Elgar's mastery of colour and texture. The key of C minor lends the march a grave, slightly sombre dignity that sets it apart from the more radiant character of its companion pieces in the series.
Elgar stands as a defining figure in English symphonic music around the turn of the century, a tradition that had long sought its own independent national voice in the face of continental dominance. The “Pomp and Circumstance” marches are more than ceremonial occasional music — they distil the spirit of the Edwardian age: representative, magnificent, and unmistakably British in character.
The composer conducted the premiere himself.
