Mily Balakirev, the founding figure of the Russian composers' circle known as "The Mighty Handful," worked on his First Symphony over the course of several decades — the score was written in multiple stages and not completed until 1897. The work thus reflects not only a personal artistic maturity, but also the entire trajectory of Russian national music in the second half of the nineteenth century.
The Symphony in C major is marked by a powerful, richly coloured orchestral language characteristic of Russian late Romanticism. Balakirev's sound world combines the Western European symphonic tradition — in particular the influences of Schumann and Liszt — with distinctive elements of Russian folk music: bold melodic arches, modal harmonies, and rhythmic vitality define the character of the work.
The orchestration, which alongside the standard string and wind forces also includes harp and percussion, lends the score a brilliant, at times epic quality. As a late major work by one of the most influential musical thinkers of his generation, the symphony stands as a significant document of the nationalist movement that left a lasting mark on the Russian orchestral repertoire.
The composer conducted the premiere himself.
