Julius Fučík (1872–1916) was one of the most significant Bohemian military bandmasters and march composers of his era. A pupil of Antonín Dvořák, he combined the solid craftsmanship of the Central European wind band tradition with a distinctive gift for melodic invention. His output stands as a prime example of the vibrant culture of light music that flourished in the late Habsburg Empire, shaped by marches, polkas, and popular concert works in the spirit of Viennese and Prague salon music.
Written in 1897, Entry of the Gladiators, Op. 68 — known in the English-speaking world as Thunders and Blazes — ranks among the most frequently performed marches in the entire history of music. Fučík originally conceived the work as a triumphal march; its irresistible rhythmic drive and the fanfare-like brilliance of the brass quickly gave it the character of a quintessential circus march, a role in which it continues to be heard worldwide to this day.
The orchestral version displays the full sonic splendor of a large ensemble: blazing brass, incisive percussion, and an unstoppable melodic momentum define the piece. Fučík captures the spirit of festive music that is at once popular in appeal and carefully crafted in execution — a combination that has kept the work timelessly accessible.
