Julius Ernest Wilhelm Fucík

Short biography Julius Ernest Wilhelm Fučík was born on 18 July 1872 in Prague and died on 25 September 1916 in Berlin. He studied at the Prague Conservatoire, where his subjects included bassoon and composition. Following his training, he served as a military bandmaster in various cities throughout the Austro-Hungarian Empire, among them Sarajevo and Budapest. From 1910 he lived in Berlin, where he devoted himself increasingly to composing and to overseeing the publication of his works.

Historical placement Fučík belongs to the Late Romantic period and is regarded as one of the most significant Bohemian composers of wind band and light music. His style is characterised by memorable melodies, rhythmic incisiveness, and accomplished instrumentation firmly rooted in the traditions of Central European military and march music. His most enduring contribution to musical history is the march "Einzug der Gladiatoren", which became one of the best-known circus marches in the world.

Personal connections Antonín Dvořák taught at the Prague music school within the same institutional environment in which Fučík received his training; however, a direct teacher–pupil relationship between the two has not been established.
