Mily Balakirev composed his Overture on Three Russian Folk Themes in 1858, at a time when he was just beginning to establish himself as the leading force of musical nationalism in Russia. The work emerged during that formative decade in which Balakirev started gathering around him the future "Mighty Handful" – that group of Russian composers who sought to forge an independent national musical language far removed from the academic traditions of Western Europe.
The overture breathes the spirit of Russian folk song and demonstrates how consistently Balakirev integrates folkloric melodies into the classical-Romantic orchestral framework. The musical language is fresh and direct, shaped by the characteristic rhythms and modalities of Russian folk music, without any loss of formal coherence. The relatively lean orchestration – strings, woodwinds, brass, and timpani – produces a transparent, colourful texture.
As one of Balakirev's early major works, the overture offers a revealing insight into his aesthetic programme: to forge a Russian identity through authentic melodic material while developing a compositional voice that would go on to exert a lasting influence on composers such as Rimsky-Korsakov and Borodin.
