Mily Balakirev, founding father of Russian musical nationalism and driving force behind the legendary "Mighty Handful," did not complete his Second Symphony in D minor until 1908 — by which time the European musical world had long since set sail for new waters. The work thus belongs to a late, stylistically conservative phase of the composer's output and stands at a certain remove from the avant-garde currents of its day.

The symphony's musical language is deeply rooted in Russian Romanticism: broad melodic arches, characteristic harmonic colorings, and vivid, richly textured orchestration define its character. Balakirev deploys the orchestra — with triple woodwinds, harp, and full percussion — with a sure instinct for sonority. The tone alternates between Slavic melancholy and vigorous vitality, in a manner typical of the Russian national school.

As a late affirmation of nineteenth-century ideals, the Second Symphony reads as a deliberate counterweight to the modern dissolution of tonality. It demonstrates that Balakirev remained, well into old age, a steadfast guardian of the very tradition he had helped to create.

Balakirev began his Symphony No. 2 in D minor as early as the 1860s, but set the work aside for decades, completing it only in 1908 - some forty years after the first sketches. In this respect, the symphony is a prime example of Balakirev's lifelong habit of conceiving and completing works over extraordinarily long periods of time, much like his piano fantasy Islamey or his Symphony No. 1. The composer himself conducted the premiere of what would be his last major orchestral work shortly before his death in 1910, making that evening one of the rare late public appearances of the master, who was by then in his seventies.

The composer conducted the premiere himself.
