Isaac Albéniz ranks among the defining figures of Spanish nationalism in late nineteenth-century music. With “Catalonia” (T 24a, composed in 1899), one of his few large-scale orchestral works, he turned explicitly to his Catalan homeland. The piece bears the subtitle “Suite populaire”, although in the end only the first movement was completed — a fragment that nonetheless demonstrates a distinctly individual character.
The musical language combines the rich colours of the late Romantic orchestra with the idiom of Iberian folk music. Albéniz, who refined his compositional craft in Brussels and Paris among other places, allows the influence of French orchestration to make itself felt in “Catalonia” without sacrificing the Mediterranean tone. Rhythmic vitality, modal inflections, and a rich harmonic palette define the character of the work.
Within Albéniz's output as a whole, which is devoted predominantly to the piano, “Catalonia” occupies a special place. The large-scale forces — including harp, an expanded wind section, and full strings — point to representational ambitions and make the work a remarkable testament to Catalan regionalism within the context of European late Romanticism.
