Webern's Passacaglia Op. 1 from 1908 stands at the beginning of one of the most consequential developments in 20th-century music history. The work shows the young composer still rooted in the late Romantic tradition, yet already displaying that tendency toward extreme motivic concentration that would characterize his entire output. The musical language is marked by harmonies that remain fundamentally tonal, but which already point beyond the boundaries of Romanticism through chromatic obscuration and complex voice leading.
As a student of Arnold Schoenberg, Webern was part of that Viennese School that would revolutionize 20th-century music. His choice of the Baroque form of the passacaglia reveals his interest in strict compositional structures, which would later find its most radical expression in serial music. The orchestral treatment demonstrates Webern's already well-developed sense for tone colors and instrumental differentiation.
The work is considered an important link between the Austrian late Romantic tradition and the coming atonal revolution. In its dense texture and expressive intensity, one can already discern traces of that uncompromising artistic attitude that would characterize Webern's later, extremely concise compositions.
The composer conducted the premiere himself.
