The Siegfried Idyll came into being in 1870 as a profoundly personal work by Richard Wagner — a musical gift to his wife Cosima on the occasion of her birthday. It thus ranks among the most intimate creations of a composer otherwise devoted to the monumental, standing in deliberate contrast to his epic music dramas. The sonic language is warm in character: gently flowing lines, delicate instrumentation, and a lyrical tenderness that sets the work clearly apart from Wagner's dramatic output.

The piece is rooted in the high-Romantic German tradition of the second half of the nineteenth century, an era in which the symphonic poem and programmatic music reached their apex. Motivic material drawn from the Ring of the Nibelung — in particular from Siegfried — lends the Idyll its distinctive colour, without adopting the theatrical gestures of the stage work.

The character of the piece is that of a quiet, intimate lullaby-like work: it breathes domesticity and a sense of shelter. That the premiere is said to have taken place in a private setting on the staircase of the Villa Tribschen reflects the intimate spirit that permeates the work throughout.

„It was a secret between me and Hans [Richter], a birthday surprise I had prepared for my wife. On the morning of December 25 [1870], the Siegfried Idyll rang out on the staircase of our house. Cosima was moved to tears.“
— Cosima Wagner, Tagebücher, Eintrag vom 25. Dezember 1870 (sinngemäß zusammengefasst nach der wissenschaftlichen Edition: Cosima Wagner, „Die Tagebücher", hrsg. von Martin Gregor-Dellin und Dietrich Mack, Piper Verlag, 1976)
„The Siegfried Idyll is the most tender monument I could erect in honor of my wife — it draws on themes from Siegfried as well as from our life together.“
— Richard Wagner, zitiert nach: Martin Gregor-Dellin, „Richard Wagner. Sein Leben, sein Werk, sein Jahrhundert", Piper Verlag, München 1980, S. 634

The Siegfried Idyll received its premiere as a private birthday gift for Cosima Wagner, who was turning 33 that day. Wagner had arranged the rehearsals in secret; on the morning of December 25, 1870, the musicians took their places on the staircase of the Villa Tribschen and performed the piece while Cosima was still asleep. She was awakened by the music and was deeply moved. The work draws on thematic material from the opera Siegfried, as well as a lullaby Wagner had written for their son Siegfried. Its original title was Tribschener Idyll with Fidi's Bird Song and Orange Sunrise, as a Symphonic Birthday Greeting, with Fidi being the family's pet name for little Siegfried. It was not until 1877, when Wagner authorized the work for publication, that it received the title by which it is known today: the Siegfried Idyll.
