This concert version by Wouter Hutschenruyter (1859–1943) features an abridged ending suited to the concert hall and has been adapted for a flexible, slightly reduced ensemble.

The "Ride of the Valkyries" comes from the second act of the opera “Die Walküre”, the second part of Richard Wagner's monumental stage festival “Der Ring des Nibelungen”, whose composition began between 1851 and 1856. The piece stands as a prime example of Wagner's revolutionary musical language of the High Romantic period: dense, chromatically saturated harmonies, vivid orchestration of tremendous power, and an unmistakable spirit of heroic unleashing. Wagner expanded the orchestra into an ensemble of extraordinary size and complexity, something that is reflected in the instrumentation of this concert version as well — with six horns, triple woodwinds, and an extensive percussion section.

Within the context of German Romanticism, the work represents a pinnacle of symphonic writing for the theatre orchestra: no other composer has so consistently elevated the orchestra to the role of dramatic protagonist. The characteristic Valkyrie motif — rhythmically incisive and impetuous — is considered one of the most recognized and powerful themes in the entire operatic literature.

It is precisely for this reason that the "Ride of the Valkyries" has firmly established itself as an independent concert piece, unleashing its elemental, exhilarating energy just as compellingly in the concert hall.

„I composed the "Ride of the Valkyries" with a ferocity and joy that struck even me; it was as though this music had always lived inside me, just waiting to finally be set free.“

On February 26, 1862, Wagner conducted one of his first major concerts in Vienna, featuring excerpts from the still-unfinished Ring of the Nibelung. The Ride of the Valkyries from the opera Die Walküre was performed in a concert version and caused a sensation among Viennese audiences, as the opera itself had yet to premiere. The concert was part of a series of events through which Wagner sought to establish himself as a composer in Vienna while at the same time raising funds to complete and stage the entire Ring cycle. The full opera Die Walküre did not receive its premiere until June 26, 1870, in Munich.

The composer conducted the premiere himself.
