Richard Wagner's overture “Rule Britannia” (WWV 42) was composed in 1836 and belongs to the earlier orchestral works of the composer – a period during which he was still intensively engaging with the musical influences of his time. The work takes up the patriotic English melody of the eighteenth century and reflects Wagner's stay in northern Europe at that time, which left a lasting mark on his artistic development.
In terms of sound, the overture moves within the orbit of the German and French orchestral tradition of the 1830s, with clear borrowings from the heroic and ceremonial genre of the concert overture as shaped by composers such as Mendelssohn and Weber. The character of the piece is defined by orchestral brilliance and a resolute, almost march-like tone that matches the nature of the underlying melody.
Within Wagner's output as a whole, the work occupies a rather peripheral position – yet it already reveals the young composer's instinct for large-scale orchestral colour and effective climactic build-ups. As a document of his early years, “Rule Britannia” nonetheless merits attention: it affords an illuminating glimpse of a Wagner still searching for his own voice between competing national idioms.
The composer conducted the premiere himself.
