With "Death and Transfiguration," Richard Strauss created one of his most significant tone poems in 1889 and definitively established himself as a leading representative of German late Romanticism. The work shows Strauss at the height of his orchestral mastery: the musical language still combines the harmonic tradition of Romanticism with highly modern orchestral techniques and an extraordinary psychological penetration of the musical material.
The score reveals Strauss's brilliant command of the late Romantic orchestral apparatus. Through subtle sound blends, sophisticated instrumentation, and a dramaturgically conceived technique of intensification, he creates a work of enormous emotional intensity. Particularly remarkable is the way Strauss combines leitmotivic work with free symphonic development, achieving a continuous sound development from the most intimate pianissimo to overwhelming orchestral tutti passages.
"Death and Transfiguration" stands as an exemplar of German program music of the 1890s and shows Strauss as heir to Liszt's symphonic poem tradition. The work is considered a prime example of the late Romantic fusion of philosophical aspiration and orchestral brilliance that Strauss would later develop further in his operas.
The composer conducted the premiere himself.
