Scriabin's "Poème de l'Extase" represents a pinnacle of Russian late Romanticism while simultaneously marking the transition to modernism. Completed in 1908, the work stands at the center of Scriabin's middle creative period, during which the composer broke away from traditional symphonic forms and developed his entirely distinctive mystical-visionary musical language.

The single-movement composition unfolds an intoxicating sound world of sensuous opulence and ecstatic intensification. Scriabin employs an extended tonality with characteristic chromatic harmonies and his famous "mystic chord." The large orchestra with expanded wind section, celesta and organ creates iridescent tonal colors and monumental climaxes that reflect Scriabin's synesthetic visions of music, color and transcendence.

The work is considered groundbreaking for Russian orchestral music of the early 20th century and influenced composers such as Stravinsky and Prokofiev. With its fusion of late Romantic orchestration and harmonic innovations, the "Poème de l'Extase" stands as exemplary of that generation of Russian composers who charted the path from national Romanticism to international modernism.
