Josef Gabriel Rheinberger, a native of Liechtenstein and longtime court organist in Munich, ranks among the most significant organ composers of the second half of the nineteenth century. His Organ Concerto in F major, Op. 137, composed in 1884, exemplifies his considered late-Romantic style: contrapuntally refined, harmonically rich, yet always committed to formal clarity. Rheinberger avoids programmatic excess and adheres to a neoclassical structural rigour that sets him apart from many of his contemporaries.
The scoring — strings and three horns accompanying the organ — produces a balanced, tonally restrained sound world in which the organ does not dominate triumphantly but is instead woven into a dialogue. The musical language is transparent and noble, with that characteristic Rheinbergerian warmth that marks his church music no less than his chamber music.
Notably, Rheinberger subsequently added an extended cadenza to the work; this is included in the present edition as an appendix to the organ part. This points to a sustained engagement with the piece and at the same time offers performers an authentic alternative to the original version.
