The Organ Concerto No. 2 in G minor op. 177 was composed between 1883 and 1884 and displays the characteristic musical language of the High Romantic period with its preference for expressive harmony and orchestral color. The choice of G minor gives the work a serious, at times dramatic fundamental character that is typical of the Romantic concerto literature of this era.

The scoring for triple horns and string orchestra without woodwinds creates a distinctive tonal balance between the monumental organ and the orchestra. This reduced yet effective orchestration enables both intimate dialogues and powerful tutti passages in which the organ's various timbres blend with the warm sounds of the brass and strings.

The work stands in the tradition of Romantic organ concertos that fully exploit the technical and tonal possibilities of the modern 19th-century organ. The composition is intended to showcase both the virtuosic abilities of the soloist and the symphonic qualities of the instrument, combining concertante brilliance with the emotional depth characteristic of the Late Romantic period.
