from "Miroirs", orchestrated by Ravel

Maurice Ravel's “Une barque sur l'océan” was composed in 1906 as an orchestral arrangement of the piano piece of the same name from the cycle “Miroirs” (1904/05). The work stands at the heart of French Impressionism and displays Ravel at the height of his ability to create sonic images of extraordinary sensuality. The orchestral version unfolds a splendour of sound that the original piano piece can barely hint at.

The sea is portrayed here not in dramatic terms, but evoked as a shimmering, ceaselessly moving element. Ravel draws on the rich colours of a large orchestra – including two harps, celesta, and a differentiated percussion section – to translate light, the motion of waves, and the vastness of the ocean into sound. The harmony remains characteristically suspended, and the orchestration is of the highest transparency despite the lavish forces employed.

“Une barque sur l'océan” stands as a prime example of the aesthetic ideal Ravel pursued throughout his life: absolute craftsmanship in the service of a poetic, atmospheric effect. The work is considered one of the most colourful examples of Impressionist orchestral art in France at the beginning of the twentieth century, and takes its rightful place alongside Debussy's great seascapes.

"Une barque sur l'océan" is the third piece from Ravel's piano cycle "Miroirs" (1904/05), which he himself arranged for orchestra. The orchestral version (M. 51c) had its world premiere on January 22, 1907, at the Concerts Lamoureux in Paris, conducted by Camille Chevillard. Ravel later grew dissatisfied with how the orchestration had turned out and withdrew the work for a considerable period of time; it would not be performed regularly again until decades later. The original version for solo piano, on the other hand, had already been published in 1906.
