Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 2 in E minor, Op. 27, composed between 1906 and 1907, ranks among the most significant works in late Romantic Russian symphonic literature. It marks a decisive turning point in the composer's career: following the traumatic failure of his First Symphony and a prolonged creative crisis, Rachmaninoff wrote this work as a triumphant return to large-scale orchestral music.

The score reflects the hallmarks of Rachmaninoff's musical language — expansive, richly lyrical melodies, harmonic opulence, and a commanding mastery of the late Romantic orchestral apparatus. The musical idiom is deeply rooted in Russian Romanticism, yet also absorbs influences from the Western European tradition, combining both into an unmistakably sensuous and introspective style. The celebrated Adagio in particular is widely regarded as one of the finest slow movements in the orchestral literature of the early twentieth century.

With its emotional depth and sonic grandeur, the symphony stands alongside the great orchestral works of the late Romantic era. The large orchestra — featuring triple woodwinds, horns, trumpets, trombones, and an extensive percussion section — enables a breadth of sound that impressively embodies Rachmaninoff's affinity for symphonic monumentality.
