Rachmaninoff's Études-Tableaux Op. 39 were composed in 1917, during a period of personal and social upheaval for the composer. These piano miniatures unite virtuosic brilliance with poetic imagery and show Rachmaninoff at the height of his compositional maturity. The title "Études-Tableaux" points to the dual nature of these pieces: technical studies that are simultaneously sonic paintings of great atmospheric density.

Ottorino Respighi's 1931 orchestration lends five selected pieces new symphonic dimensions. Respighi's masterful art of instrumentation reveals hidden orchestral qualities in Rachmaninoff's piano writing and creates colorful soundscapes of impressionistic luminosity. The programmatic titles—from stormy seascapes to the fairy-tale portrait of Little Red Riding Hood—become particularly vivid through the orchestral palette.

The work stands as exemplary of late Russian Romanticism with its fusion of national melody, French influences, and a deeply emotional musical language. Rachmaninoff's characteristic harmony with its wide chord structures and chromatic turns unfolds with particular effect in Respighi's orchestral version, making this suite a pinnacle of the art of orchestral arrangement.

Respighi himself conducted the premiere of his own orchestration of Rachmaninoff's piano études. The orchestration was created at the suggestion of Serge Koussevitzky, who had originally planned a performance with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Rachmaninoff was very pleased with Respighi's arrangement.

The premiere was conducted by the composer Ottorino Respighi.
