Prokofiev's Third Piano Concerto is considered one of the most popular works of its genre and shows the composer at the height of his early creative period. Completed in 1921, the work combines virtuosic brilliance with Prokofiev's characteristic mixture of neoclassical elements and modernist musical language. The music oscillates between lyrical intimacy and rhythmic aggression, with the solo part being technically extremely demanding.
The composer further develops his distinctive musical language here, which connects motoric rhythms with surprising harmonic turns and often ironically fractured melody. The orchestra functions not merely as accompaniment, but as an equal partner in a lively musical dialogue.
As a work of early modernism, the concerto stands as exemplary of Prokofiev's position between tradition and renewal. It is said to be among the most frequently performed piano concertos of the 20th century and demonstrates that connection between Russian musical tradition and Western European influences that characterized Prokofiev's work during his Paris years.
