Joseph Jongen's Symphonie concertante op. 81 was composed in 1926 as the pinnacle of his compositional output and is considered one of the most significant organ concertos of the 20th century. The work combines the late Romantic tradition with impressionistic tone colors and demonstrates Jongen's characteristic synthesis of German symphonic tradition and French refinement. The opulent orchestration with large wind section and rich percussion creates an equal dialogue between soloist and orchestra.
As a leading representative of the Belgian musical scene of his time, Jongen moved between the major European musical centers. His musical language unites the monumentality of German Romanticism with the subtle harmony of French Impressionism, complemented by a specifically Belgian expressive stance. The Symphonie concertante displays this stylistic versatility in its full range.
The work is said to have made a great impression at its premiere and established Jongen as one of the most important organ composers of his generation. The virtuosic yet never self-serving organ part exploits the entire sonic spectrum of the queen of instruments and makes the work a touchstone for organists of world rank.
