Joseph Jongen created in his Fantasy on Two Walloon Christmas Songs a characteristic work of Belgian Romanticism that combines the national identity of his homeland with the international late Romantic orchestral tradition. As one of the most significant Belgian composers of his generation, Jongen developed his own musical language that sought to merge French elegance with Germanic substance.

The Fantasy demonstrates Jongen's mastery of orchestral treatment, which would later serve him well as director of the Brussels Conservatory. The work breathes the spirit of the turn of the century with its predilection for programmatic content and national Romantic themes. Jongen treats the Walloon folk melodies not as mere quotation collage, but develops them symphonically and clothes them in a colorful, impressionistically tinged orchestral setting.

The opulent scoring with expanded woodwind and brass sections as well as harp enables a rich palette of colors that alternates between intimate chamber music moments and powerful tutti passages. This work, composed in 1902, stands as exemplary of Jongen's early creative period, in which he sought his compositional identity between Belgian folklore and European art music.
