Glazunow added this melancholic waltz after having finished his “Chopiniana Suite“, the ballet music for “Les Sylphides“. The waltz became the most popular “Chopiniana“ piece very soon.

New edition, set of parts are also available

Alexander Glazunov was one of the most important representatives of the late Romantic Russian school tradition, which combined the orchestral legacy of Rimsky-Korsakov with Western European influences. His musical language is characterised by rich orchestral sound, melodic warmth, and consummate craftsmanship – qualities that established him as a valued bridge-builder between the national schools of his era.

Glazunov later added the melancholy waltz in D minor – one of the most celebrated of Chopin's piano works – to his Chopiniana suite, which he had written as ballet music for Les Sylphides. The orchestration is inspired: Glazunov preserves the elegiac, dreamy character of the original and clothes it in a transparent, flowing orchestral sound that convincingly translates Chopin's idiomatic piano writing into symphonic terms. The harp and strings contribute particularly to the hovering, light-footed atmosphere.

The piece quickly became the best-known of the suite's five movements and has maintained its place in the concert repertoire to this day – as an elegant conclusion to an evening or as a showpiece in lighter orchestral programmes. It stands as an exemplary demonstration of Glazunov's ability to translate foreign idioms into the orchestral language of his time with unerring stylistic instinct.

Glazunov's "Chopiniana," Op. 52, is an orchestral suite that arranges four piano pieces by Frédéric Chopin for orchestra: a Polonaise (Op. 40, No. 1), a Nocturne (Op. 15, No. 1), a Mazurka (Op. 67, No. 3), and the well-known Waltz (Op. 70, No. 1). The suite was composed in 1893–1894 and orchestrated by Glazunov himself. The Waltz, which forms the fourth movement, went on to achieve far greater fame than the rest of the suite when Michel Fokine choreographed a ballet titled "Chopiniana" for the Mariinsky Theatre in 1907. That production later became world-famous under the name "Les Sylphides" — though it featured an entirely different selection of Chopin pieces, orchestrated by Glazunov and others. As for the premiere of the orchestral suite Op. 52 as a whole, or of the fourth movement specifically, no reliable dates have been established in the standard reference sources, including Grove, IMSLP, and various thematic catalogues.
