Elgar's Cello Concerto in E minor was composed in 1919 as the British composer's final major orchestral work and is considered his most personal statement. After the triumphant years before the First World War, which had produced works such as the "Enigma Variations" and the two symphonies, we see here a matured Elgar, marked by the horrors of war. The concerto's elegiac mood reflects a farewell to the late Romantic sound world that had made the composer famous.
The work stands as exemplary of British late Romanticism, characterized by noble melancholy and particularly warm, earthy orchestration. Elgar's distinctive harmony, which shifts between major and minor, achieves a new depth of expressiveness here. The cello is not treated as a virtuosic soloist, but as a lyrical narrator in intimate dialogue with the orchestra.
The premiere is said to have received a lukewarm reception initially, but the concerto went on to become one of the most frequently performed works of the genre. Particularly in the English-speaking world, it is regarded as the epitome of the British concert repertoire and as a moving testimony to a vanishing era.
The composer conducted the premiere himself.
