Elgar's only violin concerto was composed during his artistic maturity and is considered one of the most significant English concertos of the early 20th century. The work displays characteristic features of Elgar's late style: noble, often melancholic lyricism combines with brilliant virtuosity, while the orchestration is marked by subtle coloration and chamber-like transparency. The musical language moves between late-Romantic expressivity and an already modern harmonic idiom.
The concerto reflects Elgar's typically English voice – a blend of pastoral melancholy and imperial grandeur that embodies the cultural identity of the Edwardian era. Unlike his popular marches, this work reveals Elgar's introspective side, marking him as one of the last great Romantics.
The work's exceptional length and technical demands make it one of the great challenges of the violin repertoire. The concerto is said to have been originally conceived for Fritz Kreisler, but was only completed years later and established itself only gradually in the concert repertoire.
The composer conducted the premiere himself.
