Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875–1912) stands as one of the most distinctive voices of British late Romanticism. The son of a Sierra Leonean physician and an Englishwoman, he brought together in his music the European classical tradition with a pronounced gift for melodic warmth and colouristic orchestration. He gained international recognition above all through his choral work “Hiawatha's Wedding Feast” – yet his smaller vocal pieces are equally testament to considerable compositional sophistication.
The “Bon-Bon Suite”, op. 68, sets six poems by the Irish poet Thomas Moore (1779–1852) for baritone, chorus, and large orchestra. The title signals the work's light-hearted, playful character: delicate, graceful verse, artfully rendered in sound. Coleridge-Taylor's orchestral language here combines late-Romantic harmony with a chamber-music-like transparency – for all the lavishness of the forces, including harp, percussion, and four-part brass choir, the texture remains airy and translucent.
Moore's texts, celebrated for their tender irony and elegant versecraft, seem to meet Coleridge-Taylor's natural melodic instinct halfway. Stylistically, the work sits close to the English song and choral culture of the early twentieth century, reflecting that tradition of refined salon music which enjoyed the highest esteem in Edwardian England.
