Samuel Coleridge-Taylor composed his Ballade op. 33 in 1905 as a commissioned work for the renowned American conductor and composer John Philip Sousa. The work was created during a particularly productive creative period for the British-Sierra Leonean composer, who had already gained international recognition through his "Hiawatha" trilogy.
The Ballade demonstrates Coleridge-Taylor's characteristic fusion of European orchestral tradition with elements of African-American musical language. The single-movement work develops from a lyrical main theme to dramatic climaxes and back to poetic contemplation. Particularly noteworthy is the sophisticated instrumentation, which assigns both soloistic and ensemble-oriented passages to the various orchestral sections.
Despite its compositional quality, the Ballade long remained overshadowed by Coleridge-Taylor's better-known choral works. Only in recent times has it been rediscovered as a significant example of late Romantic orchestral music that transcends cultural boundaries and develops a distinctive musical voice. The work lasts approximately 12-15 minutes and serves excellently as an atmospheric component of Romantic concert programs.
