Samuel Coleridge-Taylor stands as one of the most distinctive voices in British music around 1900. The son of a Sierra Leonean physician and an English mother, he brought together in his music the traditions of late Romantic European art music with a remarkable gift for melody that set him apart from his contemporaries. His works emerged within the context of England's newly awakening musical life, shaped by composers such as Elgar and Stanford.
The Four Characteristic Waltzes, Op. 22, written in 1898, reflect this milieu in a most appealing way. Working within the tradition of the refined concert-hall waltz — far removed from the Viennese ballroom, yet equally distant from symphonic ambition — Coleridge-Taylor unfolds a richly coloured orchestration that enriches the classical string foundation with characterful woodwind writing and a tastefully deployed brass section. The overall manner is elegant and buoyant, with harmonies that move confidently within the late Romantic idiom.
The work shows the composer at the height of his early creative period, written shortly after the sensational success of his choral triptych Hiawatha's Wedding Feast. The waltzes demonstrate that Coleridge-Taylor commanded a assured and stylistically individual craft even in lighter genres.
