Ernest Chausson ranks among the most significant representatives of French late Romanticism. His work is shaped by a deep affinity for Wagner, which he combined with the influences of his teachers César Franck and Jules Massenet to forge a distinctive, richly textured musical language — warm, yearning, and of great harmonic sophistication.
The Poème op. 25 for violin and orchestra, composed in 1896, is one of the most perfect works of its era. The solo violin unfolds melodic arcs of mesmerizing intensity over a richly textured orchestral backdrop of strings and harp. The musical language moves through a space between late-Romantic weight and Impressionist transparency — a combination that Chausson mastered as few of his contemporaries could. The orchestral forces, including four horns, harp, and timpani, lend the work both richness and colour.
The Poème is said to have been inspired by the short story Le Roman d'un jeune homme pauvre by the Belgian writer Georges Rodenbach, though it can equally be heard as a purely musical character piece. Today it is regarded as the quintessence of the French fin de siècle — elegiac, suffused with inner fire, and of undiminished expressive power.
