New edition of Strauß’s original orchestration

Johann Strauss (son) composed the Annen-Polka, Op. 117, in 1852 – a period during which he was beginning to establish himself as an independent compositional voice alongside his famous father. The work stands as a prime example of the golden age of Viennese dance music in the nineteenth century, which reached far beyond mere entertainment and was regarded throughout Europe as a defining cultural hallmark of Vienna.

The Annen-Polka unfolds with the characteristic verve and melodic directness that made Strauss one of the most frequently performed composers of his era. In the typical manner of the Viennese polka, the piece combines rhythmic crispness with elegant lightness – precisely those qualities that continue to define the repertoire of the Viennese ballroom to this day. The orchestral language is clearly structured, colourfully scored, and shaped by that unerring melodic instinct which distinguishes Strauss's output throughout.

The Annen-Polka is one of the many smaller dance compositions with which Strauss delighted audiences in the Vienna of the Biedermeier period and the years following the March Revolution of 1848. In its compact form, it embodies the social spirit of an age that cultivated dance as a collective mode of expression – one that found perhaps its most brilliant manifestation in Vienna.

Johann Strauss (Sohn)
The "Annen-Polka," Op. 117, was named, according to Johann Strauss (son), in honor of Saint Anne, whose feast day was traditionally celebrated in Vienna with festivities and balls. The piece dates from the early period of Strauss's career and belongs to those popular dance works with which he began to establish himself as a composer in his own right, alongside his father. Reliable details about the exact premiere performance, such as a specific date, venue, or orchestra, are not clearly documented in the standard scholarly sources.

The premiere was conducted by the composer Johann (Vater) Strauss.
