Si j'etais roi Overture (McAlister)

Adolphe Adam, today best known for his ballet “Giselle”, was a central figure in Parisian opéra comique during the nineteenth century. His stage works combine melodic immediacy with compositional refinement — qualities that also make his overtures stand on their own as concert pieces.

The overture to “Si j'étais roi” (1852) comes from the mature period of Adam's career and embodies the characteristic spirit of French comic opera of the time: light-footed, brilliant, and imbued with a distinctly southern temperament. The music captivates through its flattering lyricism, distinctive rhythmic character, and transparent, colourful orchestration. Harp and percussion lend the work a festive, fairytale brilliance well suited to the opera's subject — a fantasy in which a simple fisherman dreams of being king.

Within the context of French Romanticism, Adam's musical language places him close to Auber and Hérold: pleasing without shallowness, theatrical without excess.
