Richard Strauss's Oboe Concerto in D major was composed in 1945 as one of the composer's final major works and is considered his most chamber music-like orchestral piece. After decades of monumental operas and tone poems, the 81-year-old Strauss turned to an intimate scoring that includes only strings, two each of horns, flutes, clarinets, and bassoons. The work displays Strauss at his late Romantic mastery, characterized by melodic elegance and sophisticated harmonic turns.

The musical language combines late wisdom with youthful freshness and draws upon the tradition of the German instrumental concerto. Strauss treats the oboe as a lyrical protagonist engaged in dialogic exchange with the orchestra. Characteristic features include the flowing melodic arches, chromatic passages, and transparent orchestration that makes every instrumental detail audible.

The concerto is said to rank among the most technically demanding works in the oboe literature and requires the highest musical maturity from the soloist. Created in the postwar period, it embodies Strauss's return to classical forms and a reconciliatory fundamental attitude that reflects the turbulent 20th century in a noble-elegant musical language.

The Oboe Concerto was Strauss's final completed orchestral work, composed in 1945 during his Swiss exile. It was dedicated to American oboist John de Lancie, who had visited Strauss as a GI after the war's end and asked him to write an oboe concerto. The premiere took place posthumously, as Strauss had already died in September 1949.
