Bedřich Smetana's "Dance of the Comedians" originates from his opera "The Bartered Bride" (Prodaná nevěsta) from 1870 and ranks among the most popular orchestral pieces of Czech Romanticism. This virtuosic ballet piece is heard in the third act of the opera when a traveling theater troupe delights the audience with acrobatic performances.
The music captivates through its compelling rhythmic drive and typically Bohemian character, which exemplifies Smetana's national-romantic style. Syncopated rhythms, lively melodic lines, and brilliant orchestration create an atmospherically rich circus world full of excitement and cheerfulness. The woodwinds and brass are used with particular virtuosity, while the strings shine with distinctive pizzicato passages and spirited melodies.
As a concert piece, the "Dance of the Comedians" has long since emancipated itself from its operatic origins and enjoys great popularity as an independent orchestral number. This arrangement by McAllister makes this effective piece accessible to smaller ensembles without losing the characteristic energy and orchestral brilliance of the original.
