Bedrich Smetana

Short biography Bedřich Smetana was born on 2 March 1824 in Litomyšl, Bohemia (then part of the Austrian Empire), and died on 12 May 1884 in Prague. He showed exceptional musical talent from an early age, performing publicly as a pianist as a child. He studied music formally in Prague, including piano studies with Josef Proksch, and later sought the advice and support of Franz Liszt in establishing himself as a composer. Smetana became the first conductor of the Provisional Theatre in Prague in 1866, where he championed Czech opera. Tragically, he lost his hearing entirely in 1874, yet continued to compose; he spent his final years in declining mental and physical health and died in a Prague asylum.

Historical placement Smetana is considered the founder of Czech nationalist music and a central figure of the Romantic era. His works drew on Bohemian folk idioms, dance rhythms, and national history to forge a distinctly Czech musical identity, at a time when national schools of composition were emerging across Europe. He is regarded as a foundational figure in the development of Czech opera and symphonic music, comparable in national significance to figures such as Dvořák, who followed in his wake.

Personal connections Franz Liszt offered Smetana encouragement and practical support early in his career, including assistance in publishing his first piano works. Josef Proksch was Smetana's principal music teacher in Prague, providing him with a thorough grounding in theory and piano technique. Antonín Dvořák was a younger Czech contemporary who acknowledged Smetana's pioneering role in establishing a Czech national musical tradition.
