Robert Schumann's "Carnaval" Op. 9 was composed in 1835 as one of the most significant Romantic piano cycles and shows the composer at the height of his pianistic creative period. The twenty character pieces form an imaginative kaleidoscope of different figures and moods that alternates between lyrical intimacy and virtuosic brilliance. Maurice Ravel selected four of these miniatures in 1914 for his orchestral version and transformed them into symphonic fragments of captivating sonic sophistication.
Ravel's orchestration is considered a masterpiece of the art of instrumentation and lends Schumann's Romantic visions an impressionistic luster. The French composer uses the tonal palette of the large orchestra to clothe the pianistic textures in colorful symphonic garb without losing the intimate character of the originals.
The four selected movements – Préambule, Valse allemande, Paganini and Marche – represent different facets of Schumann's poetic musical language: from the festive opening through waltz charm to the virtuosic interlude and triumphant finale. This orchestral version combines German Romanticism with French sonic artistry to create a unique listening experience.
