Robert Schumann's Requiem op. 148 was composed in 1852 during a period of personal and artistic crisis for the composer. The work displays characteristic features of German Romanticism with its inclination toward inwardness and emotional depth. Schumann develops an expressive musical language that alternates between meditative calm and dramatic intensity while unfolding his typical harmonic richness.
The choral writing reveals Schumann's experience with large-scale vocal works such as "Paradise and the Peri." He crafts the interplay between soloists, chorus and orchestra with particular impressiveness, drawing upon contrapuntal techniques that reflect his engagement with Bach. The orchestral composition combines romantic tone colors with a decidedly traditional foundation.
The Requiem is considered one of the lesser-known but quite significant sacred works of German Romanticism. Stylistically, it stands between the great Requiem settings of Mozart and Brahms and demonstrates Schumann's ability to find his unmistakable voice even in sacred music, encompassing both lyricism and drama in equal measure.
