Libretto: Cesare Sterbini (1784–1831) after Pierre Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais

Rossini's "Barbiere di Siviglia" is considered a masterpiece of Italian opera buffa and combines all the composer's characteristic elements: sparkling melodies, virtuoso coloratura, and that irresistible momentum that distinguishes his comic operas. The music breathes the spirit of the Italian bel canto tradition and shows Rossini at the height of his creative powers in the realm of comic opera.

Particularly remarkable is the way Rossini musically portrays the individual characters: Figaro's vital energy in his famous aria, Rosina's coquettish virtuosity, or the buffo interludes of the supporting roles. The orchestration is richly colored and skillfully supports the dramatic situations without overwhelming the vocal parts—a hallmark of Rossini's mature operatic technique.

The work was created in 1816 in Rome and is said to have been composed in just a few weeks. It stands in the tradition of 18th-century Italian opera buffa but renews it through Rossini's unmistakable musical language with its characteristic crescendos and rhythmic sophistication. Alongside "L'italiana in Algeri" and "La Cenerentola," "Il barbiere" forms the heart of Rossini's comic operatic output.

Date
20. Februar 1816
Venue
Rom, Teatro Argentina
The premiere was initially a failure - the audience booed and protested loudly, partly due to supporters of Paisiello, who had already composed a successful opera on the same subject. Out of respect for Paisiello, Rossini had originally titled his work 'Almaviva ossia l'inutile precauzione.' However, by the second performance on February 21st, the work had become a great success.
