Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov ranks among the most significant masters of the nineteenth-century Russian national school. As a member of "The Mighty Five," he devoted his life to developing a distinctly Russian musical language—one shaped by folk melodies, luminous orchestration, and the world of Slavic fairy tales and legends.

The Orchestral Suite, Op. 61, was composed in 1895 in connection with Rimsky-Korsakov's opera of the same name, based on a story by Nikolai Gogol, and distills the opera's atmospheric essence into concentrated form. The music conjures the mood of a Ukrainian winter night in all its magic and folk vitality: frosty sonic landscapes alternate with dance-like episodes pulsating with folkloric rhythms. Rimsky-Korsakov's unmistakable art of orchestration unfolds in full measure—the orchestral textures shimmer in subtle colors, the woodwinds and brass paint vivid characters, and the strings carry lyrical cantilenas.

Stylistically, the work belongs to the tradition of late-Romantic Russian symphonic writing and finds Rimsky-Korsakov at the height of his craft. Those who admire his chiaroscuro painting in works such as Scheherazade will discover in this suite the same masterly blend of narrative sensuality and orchestral brilliance.

"Christmas Eve" is an opera in four acts based on the story of the same name by Nikolai Gogol. Its premiere at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg was a great success with audiences. The work was composed at a time when Rimsky-Korsakov was deeply absorbed in setting Russian folk themes and traditions to music; the opera is rich in Ukrainian folk melodies and portrays the Christmas customs of the Ukrainian Cossack world. It was not the first time Gogol's Christmas tale had been set to music — Tchaikovsky had drawn on the same material in 1876 with "Vakula the Smith" (later revised as "Cherevichki"), which gave rise to a degree of rivalry and public debate about the two composers' contrasting approaches to the subject.
