Ravel's "Tzigane" was composed in 1924 as a virtuosic concert rhapsody that captures the character and tonal colors of Hungarian Gypsy music. The work demonstrates Ravel's masterful ability to integrate folkloric elements into his sophisticated musical language without resorting to mere imitation. The characteristic ornaments, glissandi, and rhythmic patterns of Roma music are refined through Ravel's impressionistic harmony and his orchestral brilliance.
The composition fits seamlessly into French musical creation of the 1920s, when many composers were seeking exotic and folkloric influences. Ravel, who had already proven his mastery in handling foreign musical idioms in "Boléro" and the "Rapsodie espagnole," created with "Tzigane" a work of enormous soloistic virtuosity.
The chamber orchestral scoring with its transparent sonority emphasizes the intimate yet simultaneously rhapsodic character of the work. Harp and celesta lend the orchestration that shimmering brilliance typical of Ravel's late creative period and make the work a pinnacle of the French violin repertoire.
