Maurice Ravel's "Valses nobles et sentimentales" were composed in 1911 initially as a piano cycle and orchestrated by the composer himself a year later. The title deliberately alludes to Schubert's waltz collection of the same name and reveals Ravel's intention to view the Viennese waltz tradition through the prism of French modernism. The eight waltzes combine nostalgic elegance with harmonic boldness and show Ravel at the height of his compositional powers.
The musical language and structure reveal Ravel's characteristic synthesis of tradition and innovation. The waltzes move between delicate impressionism and surprisingly harsh dissonances, with the composer fully deploying his mastery of orchestration. Subtle instrumental colors and sophisticated rhythmic shifts give these seemingly simple dance forms an entirely new dimension.
The work is considered exemplary of Ravel's position between Romanticism and Modernism. The music was originally intended as ballet music for "Adélaïde ou le langage des fleurs," which explains the scenic quality of the individual movements. In the concluding "Épilogue," themes from the preceding waltzes return in transfigured form, creating a poetic arc across the entire cycle.
The premiere was conducted by the composer Louis Aubert.
