Bearbeitet von Carl Simpson

Pietro Mascagni's opera “Cavalleria rusticana” (1890) is considered one of the key works of Italian Verismo – the movement that shaped late 19th-century music theatre with unvarnished realism and passionate musical language. Its premiere brought Mascagni immediate international fame.

The Intermezzo sinfonico, which sounds at the heart of the opera, stands in sharp contrast to its dramatic surroundings through its quiet intimacy. The slowly flowing melodic line, carried by a warm, almost meditative atmosphere, lends the piece a timeless quality that reaches far beyond the operatic context. This quality emerges with particular clarity in the string orchestra arrangement: the homogeneous timbre of the strings underscores the hymn-like, contemplative character of the work and allows the cantabile nature of the line to shine in its full expressive power.

The Intermezzo is today one of the best-known and most frequently performed orchestral pieces of late Verismo, and a favourite in the repertoire of string orchestras worldwide. Its simple, immediately affecting beauty makes it a compelling testament to an era in which Italian music united emotion and songfulness into a universal means of expression.

The "Intermezzo sinfonico" is not an independent concert work but comes from Pietro Mascagni's opera "Cavalleria rusticana," which had its world premiere on May 17, 1890, at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome. The Intermezzo is heard in this one-act opera between two scenes, while the curtain remains open and the stage stands empty. The opera was an overwhelming success, and this interlude in particular prompted the audience to demand an encore with thunderous applause. Mascagni had submitted the opera to the first one-act opera competition held by the Milan publishing house Sonzogno and took first prize. In later concert programs, the Intermezzo was frequently performed in arrangements for strings; however, no specific premiere date for this version as a standalone concert piece has been documented in the relevant sources.
