Pietro Mascagni

Short biography Pietro Mascagni was born on 7 December 1863 in Livorno and died on 2 August 1945 in Rome. He received his first musical training in his home city before being admitted to the Conservatorio di Milano, where he studied under Amilcare Ponchielli. After leaving his studies unfinished, he worked initially as a conductor with travelling opera companies in the Italian provinces. The decisive breakthrough came in 1890 with the one-act *Cavalleria rusticana*, which won first prize at the publisher Sonzogno's competition in Rome and brought him overnight fame. In his later years he was active as a composer and conductor, and for a time served as director of the Liceo musicale Rossini in Pesaro.

Historical placement Mascagni is regarded as one of the leading exponents of Italian verismo, a realist current in opera composition concerned with the lives of ordinary people and with strong, often violent emotions. His style is characterised by instantly appealing, passionate melody, dramatic orchestral colour, and an immediate emotional impact. With *Cavalleria rusticana*, he laid the foundations of verismo as an independent operatic tradition, alongside Ruggero Leoncavallo's *Pagliacci*. His contribution to the operatic history of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries remains undisputed, notwithstanding the shadow cast by his debut work.

Personal connections Amilcare Ponchielli was Mascagni's composition teacher at the Conservatorio di Milano. Ruggero Leoncavallo was a contemporary and stylistic fellow-traveller, whose *Pagliacci* is today regularly performed as a double bill with *Cavalleria rusticana*. Pietro Mascagni maintained a professional relationship with the music publisher Edoardo Sonzogno, who awarded the prize to *Cavalleria rusticana* and went on to publish the work.
