Pietro Mascagni's opera “Cavalleria rusticana” (1890) is considered one of the key works of Italian Verismo – the movement that shaped late 19th-century music theatre with unvarnished realism and passionate musical language. Its premiere brought Mascagni immediate international fame.
The Intermezzo sinfonico, which sounds at the heart of the opera, stands in sharp contrast to its dramatic surroundings through its quiet intimacy. The slowly flowing melodic line, carried by a warm, almost meditative atmosphere, lends the piece a timeless quality that reaches far beyond the operatic context. This quality emerges with particular clarity in the string orchestra arrangement: the homogeneous timbre of the strings underscores the hymn-like, contemplative character of the work and allows the cantabile nature of the line to shine in its full expressive power.
The Intermezzo is today one of the best-known and most frequently performed orchestral pieces of late Verismo, and a favourite in the repertoire of string orchestras worldwide. Its simple, immediately affecting beauty makes it a compelling testament to an era in which Italian music united emotion and songfulness into a universal means of expression.
