Franz Liszt's Totentanz (S. 126) ranks among the boldest and most sombre works in the Romantic piano concerto repertoire. Cast as a paraphrase on the Gregorian sequence "Dies Irae," the work unleashes a succession of virtuosic variations that transpose the medieval death motif into the high Romantic musical language of the nineteenth century. Liszt revised the piece over several decades, producing a work that functions simultaneously as pianistic fireworks and as a profound meditation on death and transience.
In stylistic terms, the Totentanz stands as a prime example of Liszt's role as a renewer of European Romanticism: the harmony pushes to the very boundaries of tonality, the piano part combines orchestral power with the most delicate lyricism, and the orchestra acts at times as a brooding backdrop, at others as an equal partner in dialogue. The work reflects that symphonic penetration of the piano concerto that Liszt advanced more decisively than any other composer of his time.
According to tradition, Liszt was inspired to write the Totentanz by the sight of a fresco depicting the dance of death — this connection between a visual source and its musical realisation is characteristic of his output, which is steeped in programme music, and lends the work an almost painterly intensity.
